Common Misconceptions about Hypnosis

Hypnosis misconceptions:

  • Giving up Control: You cannot be forced to do anything against your will. Hypnosis is not mind control, you are always in control.

  • Giving up Personal Secrets: You will not divulge any deep, dark secrets. Remember, as stated above, you are always in control.

  • It is nothing like what you've seen in the movies: Movie makers are in business to make money, and do so by sensationalizing and stretching the truth to engage the imagination of the viewer. This is for the entertainment factor.

  • Getting "stuck" in hypnosis: You cannot get stuck in hypnosis, the worst thing that can happen is that you can fall asleep.

  • Will I be asleep? Hypnosis is not sleep, it is a state of focused attention. Your body will be very relaxed, but you are still aware. Sleep is a state of unconsciousness.

Hypnosis is simply a series of instructions; all you have to do is follow the instructions of the Hypnotist (it’s like playing a combination of "make believe" and Simon Says).
